Every week, Eco India brings you stories that inspire you to build a cleaner, greener and better tomorrow.

In India, locals and environmentalists have joined forces to save the endangered Olive Ridley turtles. The Velas eco-tourism initiative is helping both the community and turtles to thrive, making the village a beacon of hope for conservation.

Noisy tourists disturbing their privacy. These places should be just for the turtles. Money by tourism is the downfall

Olive Ridley Turtle's largest natural hatching ground of India is at the coast of Gahirmatha beach, Odisha but it's unheard to many outsiders.

Great example of how an eco-conscious tourism can be developed to spread awareness along with conservation. Also, getting the local, indigenous community actively involved has ensured that their future generations will carry on the legacy.

WOnderful, I hope I can visit this beautiful place. I commend the people, everyone involed in the conservation of the turtles. This village is a role model and I hope more such places adopt this village's initiative. I have visited a simialr turtle release program in Texas. It is really exhiliarting to see those super cute tiny ones stepping out into the real world and hopefully they all come back to the same beach and lay their own eggs.

It's amazing that the organisation has used the people who poached to protect the land.

However, my question remains. What happens when the footfall increases? And Kayaking increases? I'm sure it would affect the fauna when human activities increase.

One step forward in the right direction, preserve what is left of what makes this planet such a jewel, way too much damage has been done already, if we can't change the current path to utter destruction of the environment, WE will suffer tremendously and pay a price which will be of no relation to any market value, the value of a healthy environment can't be measured in $$$!
