문 대통령, 기후정상회의 참석…온실가스 감축목표 ‘상향’

And speaking at the same summit, President Moon Jae-in has reaffirmed to other world leaders South Korea’s commitment to take part in global efforts to tackle climate change saying the country will step up its already ambitious goal for reducing carbon emissions.
Our senior Blue House correspondent Kim Min-ji has the details.

South Korea will increase its target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, or the Nationally Determined Contribution as part of efforts to enhance the country’s climate action to achieve carbon neutrality.
President Moon Jae-in reaffirmed Seoul’s commitment on Thursday during the virtual Leaders Summit on Climate hosted by U.S. President Joe Biden.

“South Korea will further raise its 2030 Nationally Determined Contribution and summit it to the UN within this year. The country already made an upward adjustment last year, when the emission goal was raised to a 24.4% reduction from 2017 levels.”

It’s in line with a key Paris Agreement goal to limit global warming at 1-point-5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels.
South Korea the world’s seventh-largest carbon emitter declared to go carbon neutral by 2050… and unveiled its Green New Deal initiative to speed up the process.
To that end, Moon said it was imperative for the world to scale down coal-powered plants announcing that the country will end all public financing for overseas coal projects.

“We will halt public financial support for new overseas coal power plants. Since the launch of my administration, we have stopped granting permits for the construction of new coal power plants domestically and shut down 10 aged units earlier than scheduled. Instead, we are swiftly increasing renewable energy development, like solar and wind power.”
. .
President Moon, who wore a tie made from plastic waste… and with a marine-waste made lapel pin on his suit… also called for active interest in the P4G Summit on green growth and sustainable development, which Seoul will host next month.
He said South Korea will make thorough preparations so that it provides a platform to create actionable visions… to serve as a stepping stone for the success of the UN Climate Change conference in November.

He doesn't know priorities of his work.

Chinese🇨🇳 pledge to carbon neutrality is absolutely meaningless.
    – When was the last time China kept its promises or honoured its signatures?
