Throughout the history of accounting a company has generally been assumed to be bust when it can no longer pay its creditors. That can no longer be true though. A company now has to be considered bankrupt if it cannot undertake its trade and be net carbon neutral when doing so. In this video I explain why.
ABOUT RICHARD MURPHY
Richard Murphy is a chartered accountant. After training with what is now KPMG he established his a firm of accountants in London, of which he was subsequently senior partner, in parallel with a career as an entrepreneur and company director which lasted until his early 40s. He then moved to a career in campaigning and academia. He co-founded the Tax Justice Network in 2003, the Green New Deal in 2008, the Fair Tax Mark in 2013 and the Corporate Accountability Network in 2019. From 2015 to 2020 he was Professor of Practice in International Political Economy at City, University of London and is now Visiting Professor of Accounting at Sheffield University Management School. His best known book is ‘The Joy of Tax’.

Sadly, since the UK's latest 'lockdown' has reduced, all I hear is that the markets are excited in anticipation of all that pent-up spending potential in us, the simple consumer. Lots of sad news from the mouthpieces of the travel industry as well. I see no reporting in the vein of common sense you talk about above. Luckily, sensible companies are investing in interesting green technologies (q.v. cryobatteries as one example), but on the other hand, my employer has just installed a new gas boiler in the office. It's going to be a long, hard slog to convince people to think about their personal role in carbon-neutrality. Time for sticks rather than carrots, but of course we have this government and it's sponsors, so that won't happen for some time. Still, there's always the next COP26 talks. LOL.

At the moment "net zero" sounds a lot like a bit of fluff to cover up for exporting emissions to others.
If an airport is counting the carbon the planes are using and the airlines are counting the carbon the planes are using and the travel agents are counting the carbon the planes are using you and the mail couriers are counting the carbon the planes are using you are triple or quadruple counting carbon .
Now there’s a challenge 👍
